As I anoint my future son with pig fat, I enact the latent tensions between parental desire and fear. This work draws upon Joseph Buey’s associations of fat as a healing agent, and my own use of the pig as a symbol of uncleanliness and sanctification. In so doing, my constant lathering becomes a form of tainted absolution.
